3 Common Hair Loss Triggers in Women

hair-loss-causes

Experiencing hair loss can be incredibly traumatic but learning about why it’s happening is a great first step in understanding it. There are many different reasons why some women experience hair loss, so read on to learn more about 3 of the most common causes.

Hair loss caused by a hormonal imbalance

An imbalance of hormones can lead to hair loss in women, particularly during the menopause when the body reduces the production of oestrogen. The loss of oestrogen can lead to higher levels of testosterone, a hormone that can be converted within hair follicles into the hormone dihydrotestosterone, or the more manageable DHT, which can stop the follicle from producing hair leading to hair loss of hair thinning (more on DHT later).

Your hair follicles are resting (really!)

Telogen effluvium (TE) refers to hair loss caused by a marked change in the number of hair follicles that are in a resting state, or to put it another way, when hairs shift from a growing phase to a shedding phase. This is usually triggered after a traumatic physical or emotional time, such as the death of a loved one, major surgery or childbirth, and in order to cope, the body shuts down certain processes, including hair production. Fortunately, this type of hair loss in women is usually temporary and hair tends to start growing again once you have fully recovered.

Hair loss can be in your genes

Female pattern baldness, otherwise known as androgenetic alopecia, is a hereditary condition that affects around 50 per cent of women over the age of 65 in the UK. The most common type of hair loss, androgenetic alopecia is caused by a number of genetic and hormonal factors including the production of the previously mentioned dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which makes the hair follicles become progressively smaller until, eventually, the follicles no longer produce hair. Unfortunately, there is no cure yet for this type of hair loss but there are a number of ways to manage it, including the innovative Volumesh hair loss system from Hair InXs that has helped many women regain their confidence over the years.
